Patterson Out for Hoosiers

As first reported at www.insidethehall.com, the Indiana Hoosiers will be without the services of guard Ron Patterson.

The good news for Indiana is this gets them down to the limit of 13 scholarships for next season, which would have been interesting had Patterson been able to play.

Patterson did not meet Indiana’s eligibility requirements, but he might be able to pass the muster somewhere else, so his future in Bloomington is even more in doubt.  He was seen as a player who could help the Hoosiers on defense from the get go.  This quote, from last November and from the linked item:

“It goes back to the athleticism, the explosiveness, the willingness. He’s got a motor that’s really second to none. His hustle, his energy, especially on the defensive end, his desire to get to the basket. He knows what his improvement measurements have to be, we knows what they have to be, he needs to continue to do that this year for his team to win and he’ll get better along the way. When all their seasons are over, then we’ll really dive in to what they need to have here.

The Hoosiers have been a popular pick as a preseason #1 in many polls and I don’t believe this will hurt their standing all that much.  Sure, the Hoosiers would rather go forward with him but I don’t believe his presence was going to make the difference in a deep run come March.
