Bullock, Garmon ‘Chance to Play’ v CMU
Hawkeyesports.com quoted Kirk Ferentz on Sunday, saying that running backs Greg Garmon and Damon Bullock have a chance to play this coming week against Central Michigan.
Ferentz also added that the team has to prepare like they will not be available.
Bullock was injured early in the second quarter when his head collided with the knee of a Northern Iowa defensive back who was coming in to assist on a tackle. Bullock appeared to lose consciousness on the field immediately after that hit and lay motionless for more than third seconds before woozily walking off the field. He did not return. Garmon was injured in the second quarter after he fell awkwardly on his elbow. He came up favoring his right side and awkwardly making his way off the field with his right arm hanging down. Speculation is he suffered a dislocated elbow, but nothing has been confirmed or released.
I have posted a video and screen capture below of Garmon as he made his way off the field after his injury. Click on the arrow to see the image and click on image to see the full size and more scope related to his elbow.
Fullback converted tailback Mark Weisman came in and took over the rushing duties for the rest of the day, gaining 113 yards on 24 carries. Mike Malloy was unavailable for the game as he had fallen ill earlier in the week, so Iowa gave Weisman some tailback reps in practice leading up to the UNI game ‘just in case’.
During the pregame broadcast, Rob Brooks pointed out that Jordan Canzeri was dressed and Ed Podolak stated that Canzeri had been working out in non-contract drills in practice last week and looked good. He also added that he would not be surprised to see Canzeri make a return after Iowa’s bye week, which follows their home game against Minnesota on September 29th.
In my opinion, I doubt we see either back this week. Bullock possibly suffered a concussion and they won’t know just what ‘grade’ that would be until later in the week. Podolak told me on Soundoff Saturday night that he had a few of those during his career and sometimes the severity didn’t become evident until a few days after taking the hit.
