2014 Athlete Jay Scheel verbally committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday

According to several high school football players on twitter, including high school teammates, Jay Scheel has committed to the Iowa football program.

While a great get for Iowa, Scheel’s commitment on Sunday was not overly surprising.  Top 2014 OL Ross Piersbacher committed to Iowa last Saturday and called Scheel to tell him the news.  Scheel told Rivals.com that he was leaning strongly towards Iowa and the speculation was he would join Piersbacher in the 2014 fold at Iowa’s 1/20 Junior Day, which appears to be the case.

He is an athlete who played quarterback last year and is a dual threat, but he also has an interest in playing receiver at the next level.  Iowa has told him he can play whichever position he wants.  He had offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota and Nebraska and coaches from Oregon have stopped by to see him in recent months.

That’s two big in-state gets for Iowa, likely from two of the top three players from the state for the Class of 2014.  WR Alan Lazard of Urbandale has committed to Iowa State, and he will battle Piersbacher for the honor of the best player in the state.
