Tubby Smith and his Golden Gopher staff get on the board with Windy City scorer.

One of the top scoring guards in the Midwest, 6-4 Alvin Ellis of the Meanstreets program and Chicago, IL DeLaSalle High has made his college choice and will sign with the Minnesota Golden Gophers in November. He made his decision after visiting the Minneapolis campus over the weekend.

Ellis averaged 16 points a game as a junior, but we look for those numbers to explode now that he will be the big gun for DeLasalle now that Alex Foster has left for Findlay Prep. He has shown he can get it done versus the nation’s best with Meanstreets, so he should have a huge season with DeLasalle this winter. That leadership role will get him ready to contribute right away with the Gophers.

He has range to three and can blow by defenders with quick first step and ability to finish in traffic with his bounce and length. He can stop and pop 15-footer or get on the perimeter and “D” you up at the two and three spots. He gives the Gophers an athletic wing to help fill the spot Julian Welch will leave when he graduates this fall.

He chose Minnesota over interest from Kansas Satte, Nebraska, Butler, Northwestern, Wichita State, and Tennessee.

He also visited the Minneapolis campus with two other key Gopher recruits, 6-8 Alex Foster and 6-9 Gavin Schilling, both former Ellis teammates at DeLasalle…they are key pieces for the Gopher class and Ellis could be key to their recruitment, stay tuned!
